Mount Tangkuban Perahu is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bandung. The Tangkuban Perahu Mountain and Crater area is indeed beautiful. In addition, it is easily accessible to visitors.

The place is quite unique, you know. You can immediately enjoy the beauty of the Tangkuban Perahu crater from the car park. No need to climb first.

If you're on vacation in Bandung, it's incomplete if you don't visit Tangkuban Perahu.

Tangkuban Perahu address

The crater tourism complex of Mount Tangkuban Perahu is located on the border of West Bandung and Subang, approximately 30 KM from downtown Bandung. The Tangkuban Perahu Tourism Park area is partly included in the districts of Subang and West Bandung.

The road to the Tangkuban Perahu location

From Bandung, direct the vehicle to the Bandung – Lembang road. Then navigate to the Ciater-Subang road. You can find the TKB Perahu entrance gate on the left, right after the Cikole pine forest.

From Subang, direct the vehicle to Jalan Cagak Subang, then turn towards Ciater – Lembang. Continue to follow this road, you can find the entrance gate to TKB Perahu on the right.

The road from Bandung to the location is good. Plus it's easy to follow. By using the Google Maps map, you can easily reach your destination.

The distance from the entrance gate to the crater area is still quite far, about 4 KM.

Public transportation

If you use public transportation, you can take public transportation from Hall – Lembang Station, stopping at the Lembang terminal. Then connect with the Lembang – Cikole public transportation.

Another alternative is to take an elf or similar transportation to Subang from the Ledeng terminal on Jalan Setiabudhi Bandung, or from the Lembang terminal.

Notes

If using a bus (tour group), you cannot park directly in the crater parking area. However, you have to park at a special terminal. From there, visitors can use the Wara-wiri transportation, or walk to the crater.

The distance from the bus parking lot to the crater is quite far and uphill. So it's better to just use wara-wiri (there is an additional fee per person).

I think it's inconvenient to use public transportation to Tangkuban Perahu, because there is no public transportation that regularly carries passengers from the entrance to the crater area. It would be better if you use a private vehicle or rent.

The crater area is the main attraction in this tourist spot in Bandung. At Tangkuban Perahu, there are several craters that you can visit.

Queen Crater

Ratu Crater is the main crater here. It is very large in size and can be said to be the main tourist attraction of the Tangkuban Perahu tourist complex. You can park your vehicle directly on the crater rim, so you don't have to walk far to get to the location.

Ratu Crater has a depth of about 500 meters. It looks like a giant bowl. Ratu Crater last erupted in 2019.

If you want to enjoy a quieter atmosphere, or just want to have a relaxing coffee while enjoying the view of the crater rim, you can walk towards the area to the right of Ratu Crater.

The atmosphere there is much calmer. In addition there are many stalls and benches on the edge of the crater for your coffee and rest.

The road there is quite unique, you know (instagrammable). You can find a road shaded by shady black trees on either side. If you are lucky, you can see some wild langurs around here.

Upas Crater

Upas Crater is smaller, located at the top of Ratu Crater. The distance is approximately 1.5 KM from Kawah Ratu. You can use the road in the right area to get here.

Upas Crater has a stretch of white sand, with bluish water. But unfortunately visitors are prohibited from getting off, because it is still dangerous.

Cikahuripan

Cikahuripan is a source of water in Tangkuban Perahu which is believed to be efficacious. It is located a little into the forest, you have to walk following the path a few hundred meters from the Upas crater gate.

Cikahuripan is often visited by people with certain intentions/beliefs.

Domas Crater

Actually, in the Tangkuban Perahu area there is also another crater worth visiting, namely the Domas Crater. In Domas Crater there are several natural hot spring pools with high sulfur content.

You can soak in sulfur mud, in some pools with warm water. Or, boil eggs in a pond with hot water.

If you are interested in going to Domas Crater, it is recommended to go to the location from the special gate of Domas Crater. It is located about 1 KM after the Tangkuban Perahu TWA entrance gate (located on the right side of the road).

If from Kawah Ratu you have to walk down the stairs quite far, and have to go up the stairs again when you go home. It's not bad, you will take approximately 1 KM going up and down the stairs if you go to Domas Crater from the Ratu Crater area.

Notes

Please note if you go to Domas Crater, you have to pay more. This is because it is required by the manager to use a guide.

Local and foreign tourists are required to use the services of a guide at an expensive price, 100-200 thousand more per trip.

Facility

The facilities in the Tangkuban Perahu area are quite complete.

For car parking, you can park directly in the area on the edge of Kawah Ratu. As for buses, park them in a special area before the crater. The motorbike parking lot is located close to the Mosque.

Around the crater lined up places to eat and snacks. So you don't have to worry about hunger or thirst. There is also a special area for souvenir traders.

In addition there are several viewing towers. From here you can see the wider crater area, or see the Tangkuban Perahu nature reserve area.

Other facilities such as gazebos for resting, benches, toilets, and so on, are scattered around the crater. In addition, the road for visitors around the tourist area is also quite good.

The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

Mount Tangkuban Perahu is famous for the legend of Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi. This mountain is known as Tangkuban Perahu (upturned boat) because when viewed from afar it looks like an overturned boat.

The Tangkuban Perahu legend tells of Sangkuriang, a boy who fell in love with his mother, Dayang Sumbi. So that Sangkuriang's wish would not come true, Dayang Sumbi proposed that a lake and a boat be made in one night.

With the efforts of Dayang Sumbi, Sangkuriang finally failed to meet these requirements. Sangkuriang then took out his anger by kicking the half-finished boat.

According to legend, the boat that was kicked by Sangkuriang landed upside down, and became Tangkuban Perahu Mountain. The stump of a tree that was cut down and made into a boat turned into Mount Bukit Stump.

The upside down shape of the boat from Mount Tangkuban Perahu is clearly visible from the Cibodas Lembang area.

Tips For Visitors

If you are going to visit here, please refer to some of our tips to make your vacation more comfortable.

The Tangkuban Perahu crater is still active. If you are sensitive to the smell of sulfur, it is recommended to bring/use a mask.

Use sunblock if necessary. Hot sun and cold air can make your skin "burn" quickly.

As with many other tourist attractions in West Java, traders here tend to be "pushy". Don't hesitate to firmly refuse.

The tourist area closes at 5 pm, so make sure you come to the location not too late.

Happy holidays!
